Description

This is the first sound track in a series of sound files produced as part of PhD thesis, titled 'Intermedia Frottage: visual representation of music & aural representation of image'.

'Exercise 1' was made from a series of 'one-shot' sketches, where sound has been created from a single scan of each page, and combined in a continuous linear format.

As well as producing a wide range of sounds, the piano is an object of natural graphic appeal, displaying qualities such as symmetry, and repetition with variation - universal design principles underlying composition in any medium.In this series, the piano has been sampled both aurally and visually.

Features that can be read from the Pianatomy scores include the suggestion of timbral characteristics, structural movement, gesture, and expression or mood.

The sound files are in a compressed format, and the full fidelity audio CD is available for loan with the exegesis from Southern Cross University Library (or from the creator). Similarly, the imagery is not available on the website collection, but a DVD or imagery is also available for loan with the exegesis from Southern Cross University Library (or from the creator).

Methodology

With the use of graphic synthesis software, the composer can draw sounds directly on the sound canvas. This means that sounds can be written to as well as read from the image.The image takes on the role of a graphic score, from which multiple readings, or interpretations are possible.
