This book is the result of a collaborative research project between ChildFund Australia and the Centre for Children and Young People, Southern Cross University, Australia. The research aimed to better understand:
1.Vietnamese children's views and experiences of learning and primary schooling in rural and remote communities (within the district of Na Ri, Bac Kan province);
2.how their views about learning and education might inform the development of future quality, basic education provided in a safe and stimulating environment; and
3.the ethical and methodological issues involved in undertaking culturally appropriate research in Vietnam that incorporates children's views and voices. The research involved interviews with 46 children from four schools in the rural Na Ri district, Northern Vietnam. The children were provided with a camera for 24 hours and asked to take photos relating to their learning, both at home and at school. The photos were then used as a stimulus for interviews with children about how they learn, and what helps them learn. By focusing on learning that also happens outside of school the project aimed to extend understandings of the range of ways children learn.
