My Creative Research PhD thesis consists of a major creative work, a novel, and an exegesis.
The novel, ‘‘Heaven and Hell at the Paradise Motel”, is preoccupied with the natural environment, its subtle seasonal changes and the way the environment impacts on its human inhabitants and how they in turn affect it.
The accompanying exegesis explores the themes and ideas that informed the creative work. The main focus of the exegesis is Gothic and Noir. The construction of Gothic and Noir as both distinct and overlapping; historically, and within the context of the regional Australian landscape; and as a battered sublime, are explored in depth as well as their role in the construction of the novel.
