Australian carers report lower levels of well-being, quality of life and positive mood than the general population. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was expected to have a positive effect on recipients, as well as carers. This research monitored NDIS effects on well-being and quality of life over 2 years in those caring for individuals with a disability. After controlling for current mood and demographics, carers continued to report lower scores than non-carers; those caring for someone with Autism reported the lowest scores. The lack of positive effects the NDIS had on carer lived experience needs to be further investigated to better inform policy and service delivery.
