Imagined Futures: Narrative Fiction and Climate Science is a practice-led creative writing research project. It investigates the questions: Is there a role for narrative fiction in climate science communication? What are the theoretical, ethical, and novelistic choices, issues and dilemmas in setting a fictional story in a realistic future changed in ways predicted by climate science? The thesis critically reflects upon the creative decisions made in fictional world-building when the process is constrained by scientific realism. It concludes that although it encounters unique challenges, creative writing can generate design solutions to the compounded ‘wicked problem’ of storytelling climate science.
